Best Time for Canyoning in Montenegro

2026 Season Guide — Month by Month

By Bogdan Mijušković, ICA Certified Guide June 2026 8 min read

The short answer: June through September is the main canyoning season in Montenegro. But the best month for you depends on which canyon you want to do, how warm you like your water, and how much you value having the canyon to yourself.

This guide breaks down the season month by month — covering weather, water levels, and canyon availability — so you can pick the perfect time for your trip.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

April — Early Season (Coast Only)

Only Krapina Canyon near Budva is accessible in April, thanks to the warmer Mediterranean climate on the coast. Air temperatures reach 15–20°C, and the water is cold but manageable with a wetsuit. Mountain canyons are still locked in by snowmelt and high water.

Best for: Visitors already on the coast who want to add canyoning to a spring trip.

May — Transition Month

Krapina is in full swing and Grabovica opens for the season. Water levels in Grabovica are a little higher than midsummer but perfectly manageable — it's a great time to go before the summer crowds arrive. Nevidio and Međuriječ are typically still too high to run safely. Air temperatures in the mountains reach 15–22°C.

Best for: Krapina on the coast or Grabovica in the mountains. Quieter than summer, great value.

June — Full Season Opens

All four canyons are operational. Water levels are still elevated from the last of the snowmelt, which makes the canyons more physical — stronger currents, deeper pools, more powerful waterfalls. Air temperatures: coast 25–30°C, mountains 20–28°C. Water: 8–14°C in the mountains, 14–18°C at Krapina.

Best for: Experienced canyoneers who enjoy higher water. Fewer tourists than July/August. Great value.

July — Peak Season Begins

The best balance of conditions across all canyons. Water levels have dropped to a sweet spot — enough flow to be exciting, low enough for comfortable swimming. Air temperatures: coast 28–35°C, mountains 25–32°C. This is when most tourists visit Montenegro, so popular time slots fill up fast.

Best for: First-timers who want ideal conditions. Book well in advance.

August — Warmest Month

The warmest air and water temperatures of the season. Water in Međuriječ can reach 20°C — almost pleasant by mountain canyon standards. Mountain canyons are at their most accessible. The busiest month for tourism overall. Similar conditions to July.

Best for: Families, anyone who hates cold water, and visitors combining canyoning with beach time on the coast.

September — The Sweet Spot

Our favourite month for canyoning, if we're being honest. Water levels are at their lowest — the canyons are at their easiest and most photogenic. The light in the gorges has a golden quality in September that you don't get in midsummer. Air temperatures: 20–28°C. Crowds thin noticeably after the first week.

Best for: Photographers, people who prefer quieter experiences, and beginners who want the easiest water conditions.

October — Late Season

Krapina near the coast remains open through October. Mountain canyons start closing, weather dependent — some years Nevidio and Grabovica run into mid-October, other years autumn rains end the season by early October. Temperatures drop: 12–20°C in the mountains.

Best for: Last-chance canyoning for the year. Check with us on current conditions before booking.

November–March — Off Season

All canyons are closed. High water levels, cold temperatures, and short daylight hours make canyoning unsafe. If you're in Montenegro during winter, explore the ski slopes at Kolašin or Žabljak instead — and plan your canyon trip for the following summer.

Which Canyon, Which Month?

A quick decision guide:

What About Weather?

Montenegro has two climate zones that matter for canyoning:

Coast (Budva / Krapina): Mediterranean climate. Hot, dry summers. Rain is rare June–September. Even in April and October, temperatures are mild enough for canyoning with a wetsuit.

Mountains (Žabljak / Durmitor): Continental mountain climate. Warm summers but cooler than the coast, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms in July–August. These usually pass quickly and don't cancel tours — but your guide will monitor conditions and reschedule if a storm poses genuine risk.

Canyoning happens rain or shine in most conditions. You're in water anyway. The only weather that cancels a trip is a thunderstorm severe enough to create flash-flood risk in the canyon — this is rare but your guide's job is to monitor for it.
