If you've never been canyoning and you're looking for the perfect place to start, Grabovica Canyon is it. Wide enough to feel comfortable, dramatic enough to feel adventurous, and short enough to leave you wanting more — it's the canyon we recommend most for first-timers visiting the Durmitor area of Montenegro.

Why Grabovica Is Perfect for Beginners
Grabovica has everything that makes canyoning exciting — rappels, waterfalls, swimming, and natural pools — without the intensity that can overwhelm a first-timer. Here's what sets it apart:
It's wide and sun-drenched. Unlike the tight, shadowy narrows of Nevidio Canyon, Grabovica is open to the sky. Sunlight reaches the water, the walls aren't claustrophobic, and the overall atmosphere is bright and welcoming. This makes a big difference for people who are nervous about their first canyon.
Six rappels, perfectly graduated. The canyon features six rappels, the tallest reaching 20 metres. They build in height as you progress, so you start with shorter, confidence-building descents before tackling the big ones. By the time you reach the 20-metre rappel, you've already done it five times and the technique feels natural.
Natural pools between obstacles. Between rappels, you'll swim through gorgeous turquoise pools and float past small waterfalls. These calm stretches give you time to catch your breath, appreciate the scenery, and chat with your group.
Short enough to enjoy, not endure. At around 2 hours in-canyon, Grabovica is long enough to feel like a real adventure but short enough that fatigue never becomes an issue. You leave the canyon buzzing with energy rather than crawling out exhausted.
What to Expect
Your Grabovica experience follows this sequence:
- Meet at the parking area near the canyon (your guide will share the exact location when your booking is confirmed)
- Gear up — wetsuit, neoprene socks, harness, and helmet, all provided
- Safety briefing — your guide demonstrates rappelling technique, hand signals, and how to move safely in the canyon
- Short approach walk to the canyon entrance
- Enter the canyon — rappel, swim, jump (optional), and float your way through 1 km of gorge
- Exit and change — towel off, get into dry clothes, and relive the highlights
The total time commitment including gear-up, briefing, approach, canyon, and return is about 3 to 3.5 hours.

If you're staying in the Žabljak / Durmitor area and it's your first time, Grabovica is the clear choice. If you're on the coast near Budva, Krapina is more accessible. And if you've already done Grabovica and want more, Nevidio is the natural next step.
